Weddin Shire is a local government area in the Central West region of New South Wales, Australia. The Shire was established in 1981 and is situated approximately 300 kilometers west of Sydney and 30 kilometers south of Cowra. The Weddin Shire covers an area of 3,096 square kilometers and includes the towns of Grenfell, Caragabal, and Quandialla. The district of Weddin was originally inhabited by the Wiradjuri tribe of Indigenous Australians for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers. In 1815, the first European explorers, John Oxley and George Evans, entered the region and were followed by settlers looking for new pastureland for their livestock. In 1866, gold was discovered in the area, and the town of Grenfell was established. This led to a population boom, and by 1870, Grenfell was proclaimed a municipality. The gold rush continued until the early 20th century, with the town reaching a peak population of around 4,000 people in the late 1800s. The agricultural industry also played a significant role in the history of Weddin. The first wheat crops were planted in the district in the 1860s, and by 1890, the area was producing over 300,000 bushels of wheat annually. Other crops grown in the region included oats, barley, and maize. Livestock farming was also a major part of the agricultural industry, with sheep and cattle being raised for wool and beef. During the early 20th century, the railways played a vital role in the growth and development of the Weddin Shire. The Grenfell Railway Station was built in 1901, which connected the region to the rest of New South Wales and helped to facilitate the transportation of goods and people. The railway was instrumental in the growth of the agricultural industry, with farmers able to send their produce to markets across the state. In the 1920s and 30s, the district experienced several droughts, which had a significant impact on the local economy. Despite this, the region continued to grow, with the construction of new roads and bridges improving access to the area. The town of Grenfell became a center for the surrounding agricultural industry, and its population stabilized at around 2,000 people. During World War II, Grenfell played a significant role in the war effort. The town was home to an airfield used by the Royal Australian Air Force for training and support of the war effort. After the war, the airfield was repurposed for civilian use and is still in operation today. In the 1950s and 60s, changes in farming practices led to the introduction of new crops such as canola and the widespread use of fertilizers and pesticides. This helped to increase yields and improve the profitability of farming in the region. Today, the Weddin Shire remains an important agricultural area, with a focus on livestock farming and cereal crops. Grenfell has a population of around 2,500 people and is home to a range of services and amenities including shops, schools, and medical facilities. In conclusion, the history of Weddin is one of agricultural growth and development, driven by an entrepreneurial spirit and a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances. From the early days of settlement to the present day, the residents of the Weddin Shire have worked hard to build a thriving agricultural community that continues to contribute to the wider economy of New South Wales.
